Originating from Berlin's Wedding district, he initially trained in sculpture before dedicating himself to photography around 1950. His seminal series "Situation Berlin" delved into the city's divided essence during 1954-1960 but faced publication delays due to the Berlin Wall's erection, finally seeing the light 42 years after the GDR's collapse. Fischer's influence extends through his teaching and mentoring roles in Leipzig, Berlin, and Dortmund, impacting three generations of photographers across Germany.
