Item Details
Description
[SHAKO PLAQUES]. Plaque d’Artillerie de Troupe de Marin. [France, ca. 1810s]. Rare brass plaque featuring the imperial eagle and with an anchor and crossed cannons motif. Approximately 5 x 5”. Some wear, soiling, the crown has become detached, yet is present. Very good. This example of this rare plaque lacks the attachment holes. The Marins de la Garde were always small in number and by 1815 had been reduced to Battalion and then Company designation; even so, 200 served at Waterloo. This plate was further altered after issue to the 3e Battalion at which time the Grenade bursts were removed resulting in a plate of great rarity. As it has no attachment holes, usually two in each wing and two beneath each grenade, it was probably not issued. Offered with a second-empire vintage child’s Shako plaque (approximately 3 ½ x 3 ¼” some wear, chipping).
