Description
PERCUSSION MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 41". Scarce second type 1812 Springfield musket altered to percussion by unique Confederate brazed bolster technique, likely by the Union Manufacturing Company. Similar conversions appear in chapter 57 of the monumental work "Confederate Rifles & Muskets" by Murphy & Madaus. Center of lock has faint "US", eagle & "SPRINGFIELD" markings. Rear of lock has 1815 date. Rear of bbl. has "P" & eagle markings. Walnut stock w/ three bands & bottom mounted sling swivels. Trumpet shaped ramrod present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: socket bayonet marked "US JA". Bayonet measures 20" overall w/ a 17" blade. Bayonet is a dull gray patina w/ oxidation. A copy of an auction catalog page from James D. Julia, dated 4/24/12, listing the gun. CONDITION: sanded stock shows a couple cracks, scattered dings, & handling wear. Lock holds both full and half cock. Metal was cleaned to bright w/ scattered oxidation & pitting. Oxidized bore. (01-23567/MJC). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,500.
