These novels give a brief glimpse at the polarization between the remaining rugged independence of the pioneer spirit that survived in the hills of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee in 1900 and the comfortable affluent society that was developing in the Eastern big cities, and a beautiful romance between them.
