Description
A Paul Revere Reproduction Sterling Silver "Sons of Liberty Bowl"
mid-20th century, mark of Richard Dimes, hand-hammered surface and hand-engraving.
5 3/4 x 11 1/4 in. diameter
53.3 troy oz.
A very fine reproduction of the original bowl created in 1768 and currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. The Liberty Bowl honored ninety-two members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives who refused to the rescind a letter sent throughout the colonies protesting the Townshend Acts, which taxed tea, paper, glass and other commodities imported from England. Many credit this act of civil disobedience by the "Glorious Ninety-Two" as a major step leading to the American Revolution.
The original bowl was commissioned by fifteen members of the Sons of Liberty, a secret group to which Paul Revere belonged. The reproduction bowl faithfully copies the original with hand-engraved names and script, along with pictorial engraving of the Liberty Cap and flags proclaiming "Bill of Rights" and "Magna Carta."
