Description
Earle R. Forrest (1883-1969) was historian, author, photographer & cowboy. Forrest wrote several books from his interviews obtaining firsthand accounts. This archive includes two page framed letter written in 1932 by a survivor of Little Big Horn; Edward Pighorn, two 8 page letters written by California Joe's grandson; Joe Milner in 1928 detailing life in Deadwood and reminiscences of Wild Bill Hickok, California Joe, and Colorado Charlie. An undated letter from Iron Eyes Cody thanks Forrest for photo and permission to use in his forthcoming book on sign language. There are two typed annotated 200+ pages each for two books: "Wicked Dodge" with signed cover letter to Caldwell Idaho publisher, 1937, stating: "I have just completed the rewriting of the manuscript of WICKED DODGE… along the lines that you suggested", 256 numbered pages. (not collated). The second typed draft is for "life of California Joe", numerous annotations and corrections, over 200 pages, highest numbered page 254, some pages are missing (not collated). Some of Forrest's papers are archived at University of Arizona. Published books include: "Missions and Pueblos of the Old Southwes"t (1929), "Arizona’s Dark and Bloody Ground" (1926), "California Joe" (1935), and "Lone War Trail of Apache Kid" (1947). CONDITION: good to very good overall. PROVENANCE: Martin Lane Historic & Western Americana Lifetime Collection. (02-22010/JS). $500-1,000.
