Shona Bakatwa Wire-Wrapped Sheath
Measures: L 9" W1.5"
Origin: Zimbabwe
Time Period: 19th -Early 20th Century
Provenance: Private Collection, UK Market
Materials: Brass Wire, Hard-Wood

The wooden sheath is bound with very beautiful intricate brass wire-work.

Traditional Use
Bakatwa were and are passed down from generation to generation in a lineage, and were used in traditional rituals to symbolize the presence of the owner?s ancestors, the sword?s previous owners. In these rituals, the owner addressed the bakatwa as if it was the physical embodiment of his ancestors.
Condition
Good Condition: Item may be worn due to age; signs of rust, damage or improper cleaning may be seen.
