"I have had the pleasure of reading this book 4 or 5 times over the years, and it is great reading every time. It could well be a movie."

"I read this book 10 years ago in college and promptly went to a used bookstore to add it to my collection. I also bought a copy and sent it to my friend in Africa, it's that good. The storylines weave together well, and there's just a touch of romance."

"The bulk of the story takes place in Paris against the worst excesses of the French Revolution. The extremely unheroic hero is Actor Roberts; a good-looking rogue equally adept at seduction and petty theft/fraud - the latter being generally referred to as 'playing Lord Credit'. Unfortunately, these two talents combine to place him in a nasty predicament.

It's not that he's a bad actor. He's actually quite superb - though on the day he gets an audition at the Comedie Francaise, he's suffering the severe after effects of a night of passion with Marie-Clarice and ends up passing out. But it's his acting skills that are likely to be the death of him. One revolutionary committee want to send him to the guillotine as the Ci-devant Vicomte de Lambriere; another wants to execute him as the English spy, Anthony Buckland. Proving that he's neither of these persons turns out to be very tricky. The only thing temporarily saving his neck is the fact that both committees are afraid of making a mistake and ending up on the guillotine themselves..." [from a review]
