[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. Five issues of The Student Voice. Atlanta: Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, January-July, 1964.
Group of 5 issues, each 4pp, folio, 8 1/2 x 11 in. (toning, creasing, light soil), comprising: Vol. 5, No. 3, 27 January 1964, covering Atlanta and Chapel Hill protests, Freedom Day in Hattiesburg [MS], and more; Vol. 5, No.11, 19 May 1964, covering Cambridge, Maryland, and Nashville, TN protests, "Terror" in Mississippi, and more; Vol. 5, No.12, 26 May 1964, covering Mississippi's increased militarization in response to SNCC's plans for "Freedom Summer," and more; Vol. 5, No. 16, 15 July 1964, covering Selma protests, Civil Rights Act compliance, Mississippi news, and more; and Vol. 5, No. 18, 29 July 1964, covering MLK and John Lewis in Mississippi, an Alabama lawsuit, and more.
The Student Voice was the newspaper published by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee's main office in Atlanta from 1960 to 1965. The independent paper emerged out of organizational disappointment at the coverage of the southern black freedom movement by the mainstream press. The goal of the newspaper was to improve communications within SNCC and publicize their members’ work, as well as to provide accurate coverage of the civil rights movement and to “present to northern supporters news which the press was not covering.” The paper, which was distributed largely on college campuses, was also an important tool to help raise funds for the organization.
