Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Stereodaguerreotype of a young woman housed in a Mascher case. From the George Kirk Warren Estate, noted Lowell, MA, daguerreotypist. Ca 1853.
Stereodaguerreotype comprised of two ninth plate daguerreotypes of a young woman posed in a studio setting, resting her arms on a small table (light tarnish to edges, otherwise very fine). Uncredited, but possibly by George Kirk Warren, Lowell, MA. Housed in "Mascher's Improved Stereoscope" quarter plate case classified as "Very Very Rare" in Berg [9-13].
Provenance: Acquired from the estate of George K. Warren (1824-1884), a noted daguerreotypist from Lowell, Massachusetts, as indicated by modern penciled notations on seals behind plate. An additional modern notation identifies the sitter as Abbie Bacon. No further documentation accompanies the lot.
Warren was active in Massachusetts from 1851-1881, based in Lowell until moving to Boston in 1870. He was a man of letters, and was well connected in literary circles with many illustrious friends. Warren specialized in portraits of famous figures and college class photos.
