2 Japanese Meiji Bowls - Imari & Satsuma Ware

Item Details

Description

East Asia, Japan era, Meiji, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of Satsuma ware and Imari style porcelain dishes, the surfaces painted in characteristically bright colors and gilding on an ivory white ground.The circular bowl is painted primarily with red and cobalt hues and a gilt hightlights, butterflies, floral motifs and garden scenes, popular in Arita ware done in the Imari style. The square bowl is a nice example of Satsuma ware with a busy floral motif and textured surface from the application of thick gilding and enamel overglazing. The underside is signed with the mark for the maker / kiln, possibly Kato Shunko. Size of square bowl: 8.5" L x 8.5" W x 3.5" H (21.6 cm x 21.6 cm x 8.9 cm); gold quality: 4.12% to 19.78%

Condition

Glazing imperfections and pitting to glaze. Some fading and staining to the gilt and glazing on the round bowl. Some fading to square bowl, but otherwise intact. Both contain lead and are not suitable for food use.
