Provenance: Private Collection UK, Jessica Leigh Collection, Bedford Art Gallery Brooklyn, New York. nvader, born Franck Slama, is an enigmatic street artist known for his iconic mosaic installations inspired by 1970s and 1980s video game culture, particularly the classic game Space Invaders. Born from the desire to liberate art from the confines of traditional spaces like museums and galleries, Invader's work takes to the streets, infiltrating urban landscapes with his pixelated creations.Since 1998, Invader has spearheaded the Space Invaders project, which involves the meticulous placement of ceramic tile mosaics resembling the pixel art of vintage video games. His invasion strategy is methodical, targeting densely populated areas in cities worldwide. Each installation, or "invasion wave," consists of 20 to 50 unique pieces strategically placed to maximize visibility and impact.Invader's identity remains shrouded in mystery, as he operates under a pseudonym and often conceals his face with a mask. He sees himself as a "hacker" of public space, spreading his mosaic "virus" for all to enjoy. His choice of locations is deliberate, often selected for their cultural significance or visibility to the public. In addition to his signature Space Invaders motifs, Invader's repertoire includes a variety of pop culture icons, from Star Wars characters to superheroes like Spider-Man. His installations have expanded beyond traditional mosaics to include QR code mosaics and Rubik's Cube creations, a style he dubs "Rubikcubism."Invader's work has garnered international acclaim, with exhibitions in major cities and inclusion in prestigious art shows. Despite the attention, he remains committed to his guerrilla art ethos, continuously evolving and reinventing his craft while staying true to his mission of democratizing art and bringing it to the masses. You can find his ceramic street art in cities around the world.
