Item Details
Description
"Hindenburg An Illustrated History: Reliving The Era of the Great Airships" text by Rick Archbold, paintings by Ken Marshall, historical consultants: Dennis R. Kromm, Dr. Henry Cord Meyer and John Proven; published by A Wellfleet Press / Madison Press Book, NJ, 2005.
Dust jacket with original unclipped price of $60.00 on the front flap; hard boards, silvery lettering on spine [some shelf wear]; large format: 11.1/2" x 11.1/4"; illustrated endpapers, 230 pages including Index, high quality glossy paper, fully illustrated, two fold-outs, very good condition.
"While about a third of the book is devoted to the "Hindenburg," it actually covers the entire history of rigid airships, going back to the 19th Century European experiments, Count Zeppelin's first primitive airships, and the German bombers of World War One. There's also quite a bit on the "Graf Zeppelin," the British "R34," "R100," and "R101," the US Navy's three ill-fated interwar dirigibles, and the arctic explorers "Norge" and "Italia." Perhaps "Zeppelin: An Illustrated History" would have been a better, and more accurate, title." [a private review]
"Although it's engagingly written enough, the real treat here is the huge number of illustrations. These range from period paintings, engravings, and postcards, to historic photographs, portraits of key figures, cutaway artworks, images of memorabilia and luggage tags, advertising posters, and maps of historic airship journeys. I'm not sure if this is the most detailed airship history available, but it's certainly the most beautifully illustrated." [a private review]
