This gorgeous piece was hand-made in France around 1880 and features a hand painted battle scene on the front and a romantic landscape with a church ruin on the back. Spine and inside are richly decorated with gold ornaments. The "book" spine carries the title "Le passage du Rhin" ("The crossing of the Rhine River") and the date 1757. Most likely, the paintings show scenes from a French war campaign that involved such a river crossing in the 18th Century. The piece is in very good antique condition with all original brass applications; one small chip to one corner (see pictures). Measures approx. 7 3/4" x 5 1/2" x 2 1/2". Marked "Made in France".
