Numbered 54/150 lower left. 24 x 27" Provenance: Revere Auctions, Jessica Leigh Collection, Bedford Art Gallery Brooklyn, New York. Stanley William Hayter (1901- 1988) was a British painter and master printmaker whose influence on 20th-century art cannot be overstated. Born in Hackney, United Kingdom, Hayter's journey into the world of art was unconventional, initially studying chemistry and geology at King’s College in London before embarking on a career with the an oil company in Iran. However, Hayter's true calling lay in the realm of creativity. His move to Paris in 1926 marked a pivotal moment as he immersed himself in the vibrant artistic community of the city. Under the tutelage of the Polish-born artist Joseph Hecht, Hayter honed his skills in engraving techniques, eventually founding the groundbreaking Atelier 17 in 1927.Atelier 17 quickly became a hub for artistic experimentation, attracting luminaries such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock, and many others. Hayter's approach to printmaking was revolutionary; he treated it not just as an art form but as a scientific endeavor, blending his background in chemistry with artistic expression.Among his notable contributions was the development of viscosity printing, a technique that allowed for the layering of multiple colors on a single intaglio plate. This innovation expanded the possibilities of printmaking and left an indelible mark on the medium. The outbreak of World War II forced Hayter to flee Europe, but his passion for art endured. He established a new print shop in New York, continuing to push the boundaries of his craft. His return to Paris in 1950 heralded a renewed period of creativity until his passing in 1988.Today, Hayter's legacy lives on through his works, which are held in esteemed collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. .
