Description: Large oil on canvas painting from the 17th century by an Italian Old Master that represents the virgin martyr Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Outstanding quality and condition from around 1620, showing Catherine of Alexandria gazing up at the sky prior to her crucifixion. About 305, the Roman Emperor Maxentius had the princess of Alexandria, Egypt, execute her by sword while she was still wearing her crown. The piece, which is larger than the one in the National Trust Collection and dates to Reni's active period, has multiple variants that suggest it was commissioned from Reni's workshop/studio circa 1620. Arrived in an exquisite gold frame. Origin: Phillips Old Master Auction, 1955Parke-Bernet, New York is Mrs. Mary Lake's property. Size: approximately 57" by 41" when framed.
