Plated brass hilt with plumed helmet pommel and reeded bone grip (two chips but not through). 24 3/4" d.e. blade of stout section suitable for fighting, in original preservative. Plated iron scabbard with raised storage rusting and about 90% plating intact. Plating was a well-established process by the 1850s as is demonstrated by the profusion of plated pocket pistols of the period. Nice representative example which can confidently be attributed to the Civil War.
