LITERATURE: Araneta, Antonio S., ed. 1030 R. Hidalgo: Volume II, Legacy in Art.Manila: Mara, Inc., 1986. Full-color illustration and painting description on page 153.
Though most known for his architectural feats (he after all designed the National Museum of the Philippines and The Manila Central Post Office, among others), Juan Arellano’s prowess in painting cannot be understated. He was touted as a possible “successor of Juan Luna” had he focused on art, and this talent is evident in his Landscape. Resembling the impressionistic works of his time, Arellano depicts a serene picture of a busy park, as evidenced by the children roaming and playing around and a shining example of his oft-forgotten talent.
