A Maya Figural Whistle and Rattle Jaina Style, Maya Regions, Mesoamerica, Late Classic, c. 500-800 AD Hollow earthenware a buff color with rattles inside, a whistling device fashioned on back. Mold-made with details added by hand. Depicts a high-ranking noble woman wearing a cloth and feather turban, ear spools, a large beaded collar, and a tunic over a skirt decorated with roundels and cross-hatching around the hem. The male child lying at her feet has a similar turban, beaded necklace, and a simple loincloth. Such figural instruments were made in the Yucatan Peninsula, especially the island of Jaina, and traded through the Maya lands. In very good, original condition as found, with earthen pigments and minerals scattered on the surface, a small chip on the woman's nose.
