(Christopher Gist accompanied Washington in Dec. of 1753 on his way to report to Gov. Dinwiddie with the French refusal to leave the Ohio Valley. They constructed a raft to cross the ice clogged Allegheny River but abandonded the raft and waded to a small island. The next morning, the river was frozen and they were able to walk to safety and continue.) This image is attributed to painter, Daniel Huntington (1816-1906).
