1855 New Hampshire Lottery Group of (5) Items, Unusual Scheme - Sale of Engravings Invested in Property to be Sold & Profits Distributed to Ticket Holders
1855 New Hampshire Lottery Scheme Termed Broadside "Sale of Engravings", Conducted by Samuel Y. Meserve of Farmington, NH - Group of 5 Items; Stamped Envelope, Circular to Agent; Ticket with Engraving; Meeting Notice and Broadside of the Lottery Scheme, Fine to Very Fine.
1855 New Hampshire Lottery - Group of 5 items; Stamped envelope, Meeting Notice, Circular, Ticket with engraving and broadside of Lottery Scheme. An unusual Lottery Scheme, in which the profits from the sale of the "engravings" (the illustrated lottery tickets), "will be invested in real and personal property to the amount of $17,300.00. A meeting for the sale of said property will be holden in the town of Farmington, July 4th, 1855; and a committee will be chosen by the audience to decide the amount each Engraving-holder is entitled to".
The Ticket measures 5" x 2-5/8", has 2 vignettes, a handwritten ticket number, and is Signed by S. Y. Meserve. The 1855 dated circular from S. Y. Meserve is directed to Agents selling tickets and gives instructions and references. The broadside measures 8-1/2" x 12-1/2" and lists the real and personal property to be sold, entitling the holder of shares "to his share of the profits arising from the sale".
Also, this lot includes a full page Printed Broadside Circular from Meserve, dated July 2, 1855 announcing that the July 4th scheduled, "meeting for the sale of the property and distribution of the profits arising from the sale" has been adjourned until Sept. 5, 1855, "on account of there being about 5000 shares not taken, and as I do not wish to have them on my hands at the time of the distribution". Lists everything from a house and shed to horses and a wide array of practical items of value.
Also, includes an Envelope with MANCHESTER N.H. / 3 PAID Postmark tying 3c imperforate Washington stamp, and addressed to Charles Barney at East Canaan, NH. (5 items)
