Description
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) is one of the fondest remembered United States Presidents of the past century. There is perhaps no more recognizable a political campaign image than this one for JFK, who would become the 35th President. This poster was an integral part of his run for President in 1960 and what would be the beginning of a noteworthy brief term in the White House.
Kennedy's campaign began on January 2, 1960. His main opponents included Hubert Humphrey, Adlai Stevenson, and Lyndon B. Johnson, who would become his Vice President. Opponents used his Catholic religion to question his candidacy. The campaign culminated in the first historic televised debate with Richard Nixon. The election was regarded as the closest of the 20th century.
During his Presidency, John F. Kennedy laid the foundation for the "Space Race" and the Civil Rights Movement. He is also known for his hard stance against Communism and Cuba, as well as initiating American involvement in Vietnam. In 1963, Kennedy was assassinated and succeeded by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. In retrospect, the era of his Presidency is referred to as "Camelot" and marks a time in American history of great optimism.
