Item Details
Description
A Unique North American Woven Caucasian Style Rug, Ca. 1930's, 2'8'' x 3'9'' (81 x 114 cm). Weight: 6 lbs. Wool. We believe this rug was likely woven in a CCC Camp in 1935, which is the inscribed date. The Emergency Conservation Work Act of 1933 mandated that the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) recruit unemployed young men from urban areas to perform conservation work throughout the nation's forests, parks, and fields. We think that "DSH" are likely the initials of the weaver and that the rug might have been started in "1934" and completed in "1935" and that its creator may have been originally from "BOSTON". The wool in the rug does not "feel" at all like typical oriental rug wool, and given the various inscriptions, we are fairly confident that it is a uniquely American product.
