BIOGRAPHY:
Pavel Nikolaev was born in Moscow in 1958. He has been drowing since childhood. He was preparing to enter an art university and attended an art college as a non-matriculated student. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Instrument Engineering. After graduation, he worked at the closed Moscow Institute of Physical and Technical Problems, where, having his own art studio, he studied the influence of wave processes'color, light, geometry'on the human psyche. In 1986, he was sent to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. His first professional exhibition was held in Moscow in 1985.Since the 1990s, he has been actively participated in the international creative process, and his works became part of the permanent exhibition of the Berlin Wall Museum. He exhibited in Poland, Germany, Switzerland, the USA, Spain, and South Africa. Since the late 90s, he has been actively engaged in painting on wood, believing that this particular material is capable of preserving energy.Since 2005, he has worked in a creative duo with his wife, Irina Maksakova, a graduate of the Art and Graphics Faculty of the Kuban State University. In their painting, which art critics often define as "Gothic Naive," the art duo often uses a wooden panel instead of canvas as a base: Pavel Nikolaev and Irina Maksakova combine in their works the artistic techniques and subjects of the "parsuna" (Russian portrait), Medieval painting, and Russian lubok (popular print).
