Dr. Syntax is a comic character created by the artistic duo of writer William Combe and illustrator Thomas Rowlandson in 1809. Often referred to as the world's first cartoon character, Dr. Syntax is a bumbling but well-meaning academic who embarks on a series of humorous adventures in search of the picturesque. These adventures, typically documented in a series of poems with illustrations, satirized the travel writing and fascination with the "picturesque" that was popular in early 19th century England. Dr. Syntax's mishaps and encounters with eccentric characters provided lighthearted entertainment while also offering a subtle critique of social trends.
