Description
Ca. 400 - 200 BC This mummiform bivalve wooden coffin, provided with rectangular plinth beneath the feet, shows a falcon head with human hears, framed by a striated tripartite wig. The falcon head is finely sculpted and exhibit the characteristic short sharply hooked beak with one dotted line extending over the throat; the are eyes bulbous, cheeks in yellow outline. Both lid and case are entirely coated with a black layer5 , upon which hieroglyphic text and decorative elements are painted in yellow. Along the entire length of the back of the case, the black colour is missing, leaving wooden surface exposed; the scant surviving traces indicate the former presence of a hieroglyphic inscription painted in yellow. A bead collar with six rows is depicted between the front lappets of the wig; the chest and lower thorax area is occupied by two registers framed by block friezes. Two falcon's heads with striated wigs, bearing sun discs, surmount the upper frame of the first register. This typology of coffins made from sycamore wood6 , originally do not contain actual mummy but a so-called corn-mummy a symbolic Sokar-Osiris mummy stuffed with resin, earth, sand, wax and linen.Size: 155mm x 480mm; Weight: 2.94kg.
