Description
Autograph letter signed "Kosciuszko", written in French from Paris and dated 27 Frimaire, an V (December 17, 1796, French Revolutionary Calendar). Addressed to a "Citoyen Général," the letter conveys Kociuszko's reflections following recent political and military developments in Europe and includes a patriotic reference to King Jan III Sobieski, the famed Polish military leader. Written while Kociuszko was in Europe following the failure of the 1794 uprising, this letter reflects his continued ideological engagement with liberty movements in France and abroad. Kosciuszko expresses gratitude, fraternity, and shared purpose in the struggle for freedom, invoking patriotism and unity among "compatriotes" and emphasizing international solidarity. The closing, "Salut et fraternité", accompanied by his bold signature, demonstrates his adoption of Revolutionary language and identity during this period of exile. A historically important personal and political document from one of Europe's great military figures, composed shortly after his release from imprisonment and during a period of active political networking in Paris. Tadeusz Kosciuszko (1746-1817) was a Polish-Lithuanian military engineer, general, and national hero who also served as a colonel in the American Revolutionary War under George Washington. He later became Supreme Commander of the Polish national forces during the Kociuszko Uprising of 1794, leading the fight against foreign partition of Poland. Renowned for his advocacy of liberty and social reform, Kociuszko is remembered as a champion of independence in both Europe and the United States. Approx. dimensions (in): 8.75 x 8.
