Lot Title: Black-shouldered Elanus - original Audubon printAuthor/Artist: John James AudubonDate: 1871Source: "Birds of America" - 1871 editionSize/Format: 10.5 x 6.75 inchesProcess: Hand-colored litographAdditional Information: The story of Audubon’s “Birds of America” is a tale of artistic creation in the face of great challenges. From his rough travels across America making the initial drawings to the printing of the elephant folio edition in England, and then to the smaller affordable octavo edition in 1849 that reached a broad public and helped the family survive, it’s a complex and dramatic story. The octavo editions of “Birds of America” culminate with the 1871 publication by George R. Lockwood in New York. Lockwood purchased the original litho stones in the family’s bankruptcy sale. Soon after publication, the stones were destroyed in a fire, which in effect make these the last legitimate prints produced. We offer original hand-colored lithographs from that edition. Postage is combined for multiple purchases.
