The box sits on three ornate, scroll-cut legs, giving it a pedestal-like stance. A circular lower shelf connects the legs and adds stability—an uncommon but attractive detail. On each side, the maker added handles with circular whimsy rings. This is a complex, folk-art piece, probably made in the early-20th century. The craftsmanship and symmetry suggest a skilled carver, and the pedestal form is unusual—most tramp art boxes sit flat, so the raised tripod base makes this one particularly distinctive. On the inside of the drawer is the notation, '160 pcs. Made by Edir Bender,' with an address and his photo. I have never seen whimsy rings attached to a tramp art piece, and I have bought and sold many pieces of tramp art over a 40-year career. This is indeed a special tramp art object.
