Mimeographed typescript, 280 x 215mm. (foxing, some marginal tears). Leatherette binder with window to reveal title page (rubbed at extremities).
Jimmy Carter's atomic submarine training manual. While known since for his decades of charity work and his peace-oriented tenure as President, Carter's public life began in the navy. After shortly after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy (see Lot 887), Carter would serve as one of Hyman G. Rickover's first disciples in the program that would later create the first nuclear-powered submarines. From 1952 to 1953, Lt. Carter would serve with the Nuclear Reactors Branch of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, where he would assist in the design and development of nuclear propulsion for naval vessels, including submarines. The final page features a mimeographed certificate issued to "John Doe" certifying that the book's owner "has completed the reactor operations training course and has so well merited as to be proclaimed: Atomic Submariner Signed this 5th Day of June, 1953…."
