Needlework Sampler, 1837

Description

Motif and religious text sampler worked by Jane Dye, 1837. Meandering flower and vine border with scattered motifs of flowering urns, butterflies and stylized flowers. Religious verse separated with horizontal bands and reads "Search me, O'Lord and know my heart/Try me and prove each inward part/show me my sin, and by thy grace/lead me in thine eternal ways". Maker's name and date enclosed in strawberry and vine cartouche. Linen ground with silk embroidery. Condition: handstitched to cardboard backing, rust transfer to edges from framing nails.
