Description
Lovely ruffled edge carnival glass bowl from the 1910s. Harry Northwood began his career working in the glass industry in England. In 1881. He immigrated to the United States and opened H. Northwood in Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1902. In 1908, shortly after Fenton introduced their iridescent line, Northwood created theirs, calling it "Golden Iris", the color we know as marigold. About this time they added amethyst, cobalt blue, and green. In 1912, Northwood added the colors we call pastel, ice blue, ice green, and white. But Northwood is probably best known for their aqua opalescent glass, which they added around the same time. Harry Northwood died in 1918 and the factory ceased production in the early 1920's.
This beautiful Northwood carnival footed bowl is the Grape & Cable pattern. It is the standard design of four smaller leaves in the center surrounded by four clusters of grapes and four large leaves. The outer border is smooth with gentle ruffles and spear-point edge. Wonderful iridescent colors of blue, rose, green and copper over the green glass base. The bowl measures 8" across, 3 1/2" in height and rests of three plain spatula feet. It is not marked. Rare to find a piece in this condition.
