Description
This striking vessel is a premium example of highly textural Primitive Treenware. Dating to the late 19th or early 20th Century, this piece was originally crafted as a heavy-duty utilitarian mortar for grinding grain or spices in a rural community. Its defining characteristic is the dramatic, two-part profile: a wide, cylindrical body balanced on a tapered pedestal base featuring subtly cut-out arches for structural stability. It is the exceptional surface finish, however, that sets this piece apart. The dark, heavily oxidized wood boasts a deep, organic oxidized patina"”a rich, near-black color achieved naturally over decades through contact with moisture, grain oils, and age. This dense color and authentic, tactile wear elevate the vessel to a sculptural piece of folk history.
With its architectural form and dramatic dark coloring, this mortar is a sophisticated anchor piece for Organic Modernism or Wabi-Sabi interiors. Its proportions (12" D x 15" H) make it incredibly versatile.
Use it as a Grand Side Table: This is the most compelling use. Its 15-inch height is perfect as an occasional table next to a low sofa or chair. Simply top it with a custom-cut 14 to 16-inch circular slab of limestone, white marble, or thick live-edge wood to create a stunning, custom-built side table. Or make it a Minimalist Planter: The deep, cylindrical well is ideal for containing a lush, sculptural plant (like the dried blooms shown) or for organizing essential items, such as large candles or art supplies, on a desk or console. Its heavy-bottomed, grounded silhouette provides unmatched stability and gravitas to any display.
