NOTES / REFERENCES : Ed Furuike was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii when Hawaii was still a territory of the United States. He started painting in 1975 using only a palette knife. "When I held the palette knife for the first time, I knew what I would be doing for the rest of my life." He traveled to Japan in 1984. In 1996 he journeyed to London and France, visiting Paris, Versailles and Monet's Garden in Giverny, painting and absorbing the beauty and the rich artistic history of those countries. In 1995, Furuike began to share his knowledge of painting with five students. In 2001, when he closed the classes, he had over 40 students. He believes that art heals and through a couple of his students, he has become interested in spirituality and has studied the art of Reiki and Sacred Healing. One of his paintings is on the front cover of the Hawaiian history textbook, "A History of Hawaii", which is used in Hawaii's public and private schools. He describes his method as "heavy impasto with a soft and ethereal effect using a single palette knife. I go out to paint on location painting as well as in the studio with photographs."
