J. SPRINGER. Cal. 36. S# 2768. The 24" swamped octagon barrel is fitted with single standing leaf "U" notch rear and silver bead front sights. Top flat is engraved "J. Springer in Wien" "Stock in Eisen N3" ((Nail Tree) an address in Vienna). Large coin finished breech has central turret attached to front pivoting lever with detent lock which revolves 1/4 turn to the right allowing access to load a paper cartridge from the right as well as some sort of priming disc, similar to Smith's patent, from the left. When rotated back into battery, rifle can be fired with back spring lock and internal striker which is cocked by a percussion type hammer. Action and lock are engraved with very nicely cut open flowing acanthus scroll. "Springer" is in banner on lockplate. Action tang is fitted with lollipop type flip-up rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. Trigger is set. Acanthus engraved trigger guard bow has tang which is covered by scroll carved walnut forming grip. Straight grip buttstock of lightly figured European walnut measures 13-5/8" over steel buttplate engraved with S# "2768". Stock features swept right hand shadow line cheekpiece, point pattern grip checkering and sling button on toeline with matching loop on bottom of barrel. Simple small forend attaches to barrel with screw through protective base plate for opening lever. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: invoice for this rifle from Amoskeag Auction Company. CONDITION: good as refinished. Barrel retains most of a sympathetic re-black. Action and lock are cleaned to silver gray. Stock retains nearly all of an oil refinish over scattered marks and is quite light in color. There is some epoxy wood repair below rear of lockplate. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically good.
