1 page ALS, Lexington, Va February 24, 1866 to Charles E. Waters. Lee writes: "It affords me Pleasure to do anything in my power to aid the ladies of Baltimore in their benevolent enterprise" Lee encloses sheet of his autographs. "I shall however be compensated if they will add a single dime to your generous contributions to the suffering people of the South who are in need of all you can give.". A letter written Feb. 21 to Lee describes how the ladies of Baltimore are organizing a fair to raise funds for the relief of southerners affected by the Civil War. He requests, at the suggestion of his wife, that Lee send a set of his autographs to be sold at the fair to raise money for their cause. The letter to Lee is archived at Washington & Lee University. CONDITION: fine with exception of 2-sided tape adhered to verso with dealer description and price, adhesive is bleeding through which can be greatly improved with archival removal of tape.
