Yupik mask with a face showing a grimace, made of braided willow twigs. The contours are decorated with subjects in the form of fish and elements reminiscent of limbs. Polychrome, with matte and velvety pigments. Dim: 38 x 38 x 14 cm, 337 gram. Stand not included. Good condition, some minor wear due age. In the Arctic regions of North America, called Inuit Nunangat, lives the Inuit people, related to the Yupit, Yupiks, from Alaska and Siberia. The Yupik Eskimos make, while reproducing certain traditional conventions, ceremonial masks in very diverse sizes and forms. On each occasion, often inspired by a dream, the shaman tells the sculptor the function and the form of the required mask, which he himself will wear. The masks are connected to the souls (yua) of various animals or fish, which must be honored through rituals. Rarely offered on the market. Careful registered sending, combined shipping possible.
