He is known for monoprints, mixed media lithographs, and graphite drawings, and African-American imagery is among his subject matter. His work is in the collections of the Schomburg Center for Black Research Museum in Harlem, the United States Library of Congress, The Arkansas Arts Center, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Through drawings and prints Aj Smith is able to explore creative processes with the freedom to experiment. Graphite pencil, silverpoint and printmaking processes provide an effective means to communicate subtle emotions and feelings where words are often inadequate. In drawings and prints Smith hopes to reveal that facet of one’s personality held secure behind the facade seen during casual encounters. In Smith’s portraits he presents the spirit of one’s soul. This is most effective in the drawings of children and older adults. The accepting face of the young child and the aged is a reminder of our own innocence and humanity.
