This Antique John Maddock & Sons Royal Vitreous England Superior Wash Basin and Pitcher is in Excellent condition. No chips, cracks, crazing or flea bites. It does have some missing gold trim and some minor discoloration on the handle. This is a striking display piece. It measures 11” tall x 11 ¾” spout to handle x 7 ¾” in width. Basin is 16 ½” in diameter and approximately 3 ½” deep. A Little History: John Maddock and Sons royal vitreous pottery is known and highly sought after category of antique pottery. Produced by the John Maddock and Sons company, is known for superior craftsmanship. Founded in 1842, it was known only as J. Maddock until 1855, when it became known as John Maddock and Son. Then, in it 1870, it became known as John Maddock and Sons. Many of the manufacturer's seals on the pottery give the full name of the company, and it is accordingly possible to date early John Maddock pieces by the name used on the official seal. The backstamp dates this piece from 1896 till the mid 60’s. Production of original J. Maddock and Sons royal pottery continued until the mid-1960s. There were 3 backstamps that used the Ltd. This is the earliest so most likely during the Victorian Period was the production date. The fine china produced by this firm quickly became noted for its intricate floral designs and its delicate appearance.
