Canadian. C. 1870-1880. Brass metal. James Foster was born in Toronto in 1830 and manufactured instruments, circa 1870-1910. This was an instrument used by surveyors and civil engineers to level footings, etc, and to determine differences in elevation between various points. Marked, "J. Foster Toronto", on side of level. Telescope in closed position: 12.75" long. In case: 6" x 18" x 5". Canadian. C. 1870-1880. James Foster was born in Toronto in 1830 and manufactured instruments, circa 1870-1910.
