Description
An excellent rare original extra large Japanese History School poster. It came with a collection of 18 posters published in Japan, which were banned after the end of WW2 by the general headquarters of the allied forces. It was used in Japan, before the end of WWII.
The poster is depicting Hakuseki Arai (新井 白石, March 24, 1657 – June 29, 1725), who was a Confucianist, scholar-bureaucrat, academic, administrator, writer and politician in Japan during the middle of the Edo period, who advised the shÅgun Tokugawa Ienobu. Hakuseki was born in Edo and from a very early age displayed signs of genius. He studied Chinese literature, history, geology, linguistics and philosophy.
When it was published? Between early 1900s and 1940s. We only can say for sure that it was used before 1945. I believe it is hard to find other copies of this poster even in Japan, because it was banned after WW2 and because of all historical events that took place in the 20th century.
I could track history of this collection in the U.S. back to 20 years ago, when it was purchased at estate sale in Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs has a large military population, and I assume it was brought to the U.S. by someone who was stationed in Japan, but these are just my speculations.
Printed on one side. We found no losses or stains on the picture. There is age wear on edges. But when the posted is matted this won't show. We will pack it with care and ship it to you in a tube. Please notice: this is not a reproduction, but original lithograph of a huge size and in good condition. Mat and frame for display only.
