Komagata is the name of the riverside in Asakusa. Three of mixed company, just coming out of the boat, are strolling around. Colors are used stunningly in this picture. Against the blue of the Sumida, the man wears a silk coat pencil striped on a yellow ground, his garment is black silk. The woman wears a greenish silk contrasted with vermillion. The tiny pattern on the little boy's coat is painted photographically. KIYONAGA is one artist who brought into his art the details of the contemporary fashion with vivid realism, and he knew how to use the background to further the sensuous effect of this subject.
This set of 8 views of Kinryu-zan of Asakusa is KIYONAGA's early work, collecting 8 beauties set in different surrounding each set, like the teahouse in the precincts of the Kannon temple or on the bridge of Azuma, or around the Taro Inari Shrine. The sheet used here is medium sized. And the picture is by far the best of the set.
