This is a light work. Takanawa is the back entrance to Edo (former name of Tokyo) via Shinagawa. The lapping ripples in the evening cool of the inland sea spell a flawless tranquility of mood. A couple o tea-house waitresses are relaxing on the stool after a busy day. The way they are putting out their feet, carefree and relaxed, bespeaks of the mood of sheer mindless happiness. Takanawa area had a host of similar tea-houses for revelers of the summer evening. As they enjoyed the moon and the breeze of a serene summer evening such as this, the Edoites were quite innocent of the knowledge of the United States or Hawaii in existence beyond the horizon, for they never dreamed of any other world besides their own.
