Description
Art Pottery of the United States: An Encyclopedia of Producers and Their Marks.
Hardcover, english, 1st edition 1974.
"Art Pottery of the United States is directed not only to the scholar, but to the average collector as well. It is an encyclopedia of the producers and their marks, more comprehensive in scope than any other book on this subject. Not since Edwin Atlee Barber's Marks of American Potters (1904), has there been such a complete compilation of American art potteries. The author has been researching art potteries in America for more than fifteen years. His constant efforts in this direction have uncovered many new artists not included in other books; mistakes made by others have also been corrected here. More than half of the marks illustrated have never appeared or been identified in other works. But he is quick to point out that while marks are of considerable value to the collector, the ultimate value of an object must be based on its overall artistic and technical merit. Examples of the products of particular potteries and artists are included throughout this book. Also, the locations of various public collections available for collectors and researchers to see and study at close hand are given. Illustrations of art pottery have been drawn from museum collections, private collections, and from contemporary trade journals to give the broadest view of what the author believes are the best examples extant. It should not be assumed from this that good examples are not currently available to collectors for acquisition. On the contrary, many fine examples of American art pottery are available today, and at relatively reasonable prices. Illustrations included are typical of the wares of certain producers as well as their best, and most artistic examples." -- Dust jacket
