Description
Picture is in very good condition. Already equipped for hanging. Edge of matting has a small imperfection. Also, some damage has been done to the back. I ran my fingers around on the front and there doesn't seem to be any damage there. See my last four pictures.
This painter (1929-2010) was born into a German-speaking Jewish family, was deported in 1941 to a Transnistrian concentration camp and survived that because of showing to delegates of the Red Cross (who facilitated his and his sister's escape) sketches he composed on scraps of paper depicting the horrors of the holocaust. His accomplishments, honors and awards were many. Just as an example, here are a few:
1949–1951 Awarded a scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, FR
1954 - Gold Medal, Triennale di Milano, Milan, IT
1977 - Chevalier de l'Order, des Arts et des Lettres, Paris, FR
1987 - Grand Prix des Arts, de la Ville de Paris, FR
2012 – Solo Exhibition - Avigdor Arikha: Works from the Estate, Marlborough Gallery, New York, US
2019 – Solo Exhibition - Avigdor Arikha: A Breath, Benaki Museum, Athens, GR
----------------
Measurements:
Overall (Picture + Matting + Frame) is 30.5 inches by 35.5 inches.
Picture alone is 21.25 inches by 27.75 inches.
The picture does not have any glass in it. I checked with Hobby Lobby and
they said that it would cost about $100 to put glass in it, but I decided not to put any in it because (1) A piece of glass that big would easily be broken in shipment,
(2) it would increase the shipment charges quite a bit and
(3) the value of the painting is too much to risk over a piece of glass, so I will leave that for you to do. A piece of glass is easily obtained from a local glass company.
(4) I just don't feel confident that it could ship it to you safely.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: There is a small nick in the edge of the matting. There are some places on the back where damage has occurred, but the picture is on a rather heavy paper board. I felt the surface of the picture and cannot feel where any of the damage comes thru to the picture. Neither can I see it when I turn the picture and look at it from various angles. It looks very nice. I have taken the glass out, though and will not be shipping it with glass. Glass is easy to come by, but this nice picture should not be risked by sending it with the glass. It is a big picture and that big a piece of glass is just too apt to break and disappoint us all.
