Description
An excellent First Edition Impressionist, American Classical, French, Traditional or Eclectic Style, vintage full-color print of oil painting "One the Beach" by Edouard Manet. Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 4. Excellent condition - never framed.
Overall 11.8" W x 9.1" H
Image 10.3" W x 8.5" H
The persons figuring here are Mme Edouard Manet and her brother-in-law, Eugene Manet. Here the artist's fondness for the various shades of black (proscribed by the Impressionists) is given free play in the dark patch of his brother's cap and the black ribbons of Mme Manet's headdress--with the happiest results. The composition owes much to that Japanese technique from which so often Manet drew his inspiration. It is, so to speak, out of plumb, crowded down on the bottom edge of the canvas. The most prominent figure is seemingly cut short at the waist and, in accordance with Japanese practice, the strongest values play but minimal parts in the lay-out.
