Description
Stunning vintage set of three Chinese porcelain snuff bottles, each featuring a dragon design. These pieces are reminiscent of Schumacher's iconic Chiang Mai Dragon pattern. The bottles are three different shapes, each adorned with the dragon motif, and include a jade stopper and a small spoon attached.
Originally conceived as precious containers for ground tobacco imported into China, snuff bottles were initially made for the emperor and the court. While smoking tobacco was illegal during the Qing Dynasty, the use of snuff was permitted, as it was considered a remedy for common ailments such as colds, headaches, and stomach disorders. Today, these bottles are highly collectible due to their intricate detail and beauty.
The set is in excellent condition and features three character marks on the bottom. From an estate where the owners traveled extensively, I believe these were purchased in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Each bottle measures approximately 2.5 inches in height, 1.5 to 2 inches in width, and 1 inch in depth.
