An excellent 19th century Japanese Woodblock print after one of the prints by Sharaku Toshusai from Kabuki Actors series depicting Actor Segawa KikujurÅ III as Oshizu, Wife of Tanabe. Excellent condition for age, some foxing on back typical for 19th century prints. You can also see paint coming almost all the way through to the back, which is also typical for only antique woodblock prints because of quality of antique paper. Gorgeous colors and superb quality. Comes from old collection of Japanese woodblock prints found at auction in Japan. Japan, 19th - early 20th century.

Woodblock prints from 18th century have almost all colors through and show on the backs of the prints heavily. You won't see this on second half of the 20th century woodblock prints reproductions.
Sharaku Toshusai's entire career was crammed into a 10-month period from 1794 to 1795, during which he produced 145 separate print sheets. There is very little information about the artist and Japanese Art experts believe that this works were done by group of artists working for one publisher.
