Description
This print an excellent 19th - early 20th century reproduction of Bay of Noboto woodblock print by famous Japanese artist Hokusai Katsushika, which is part of his very well known series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji". These series were published between 1831-1835 when Hokusai was in his 70s. We believe that this print is artwork by one of his students. Paper shows typical for late 19th - early 20th century prints foxing on back. This woodblock print represents Ukiyo-e style. Ukiyo-e style was developed in the Edo period (16-18th century) and expanded in the 19th century when artists started to show every day life of middle class Japanese people, farmers working on the farms, builders working on contractions, actors and courtesans. This print shows farmers at Noboto Coast. The artwork is beautifully balanced around the torii gate with all natural elements in the scene, as if sea, sky, land, forest, mountain, and people are all contained within a higher law.
