Description
Ancient Mediterranean, Cyprus, Cypro-Geometric III period, ca. 850 BCE. A charming redware pitcher from ancient Cyprus, its simplicity touched with a quiet elegance. This wheel-thrown vessel features a globular body that tapers to a low foot ring, surmounted by a tall cylindrical neck with a flared mouth for controlled pouring. A single strap handle rises gracefully from shoulder to rim, reinforcing the functional beauty of the form. A raised ridge encircles the neck near its base - a characteristic design element of the period - while the surface is decorated with faint horizontal striations created by a comb or stylus, lending a sense of rhythm and texture to the otherwise unglazed form. The terracotta surface has mellowed to soft orange and salmon tones with mineral and calcareous deposits, grounding this piece firmly in its ancient earthen origins. Size of : 4.5" L x 4.2" W x 8" H (11.4 cm x 10.7 cm x 20.3 cm)
Pitchers like this were used for everyday tasks: pouring water, wine, or oil in domestic or ritual contexts. Yet even the utilitarian objects of Cypriot life were shaped with care and balance, testifying to a refined ceramic tradition that bridged Mycenaean influence with emerging local identities during the Iron Age. This vessel dates to the Cypro-Geometric III period, a time marked by shifting settlements, evolving burial customs, and an increasing emphasis on individual artistry. Its humble proportions and earthy finish carry the subtle poise of centuries past.
